CHRISTIAN ORTHODOXY

A Panachyda is a Memorial Litia (service) for those who are asleep in the Lord.  It gives loved ones a chance to pray to the Lord, asking Him to pardon all of the departed sins, both voluntary and involuntary, and to give rest to the soul(s) of your departed loved one(s), in a place of light, a place of refreshment and a place of repose where there is no sickness, sighing, nor sorrow.  The service proceeds as follows:

Priest:  Blessed is our God always, now and ever and to the ages of ages.

Choir:  Amen.  Holy God, holy Mighty, Holy Immortal, have mercy on us.  (3 times)  Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever and to the ages.  Amen.
All-Holy Trinity, have mercy on us.  Lord, cleanse us from our sins.  Master, pardon our transgressions.  Holy One, visit us and heal our infirmities, for Your Name’s sake.
Lord have mercy, Lord have mercy, Lord have mercy.
Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever and to the ages of ages. Amen.
Our father, Who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy Name.  Thy Kingdom come.  Thy Will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.  And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us form the evil one.

Priest:  For Thine is the Kingdom, the Power and the Glory, of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, now and ever and to the ages of ages.

Choir:  Amen.

Troparia, Tone 4:

With the souls of the righteous departed, Saviour, grant rest to the soul(s) of your servant(s).  Preserve him (her, them) in the blessed life which is with You, Lover of all Mankind.
In Your place of rest, our Lord, where all Your saints repose, grant rest to the soul(s) of Your servant(s), for You alone love all humanity.
Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit.
You are the God Who descended into Hades and loosed the bonds of the captives, grant rest also to the soul(s) of Your servant(s), Saviour.
Now and ever and to the ages of ages. Amen.
Only Pure and Undefiled Virgin, who without seed gave birth to God, pray for the salvation of the soul(s) of His servants.
